Our Strengths
Visitors to Ashburnham are usually struck by the welcoming nature of the school –the buildings, the staff and most importantly of all, the pupils.
The school is all on a single floor, with classrooms organised round a central hall, and no steps anywhere. This, coupled with a total pupil population of only 220, means Ashburnham is a place where everyone knows each other, creating a real sense of a school ‘family’.
And yes, this extends to impromptu hugs for the Headteacher now and again.
Diversity, tolerance, personal responsibility
Despite its modest size, Ashburnham’s intake is one of the most diverse in London. Pupils at the school come from over 40 countries, speak over 20 different languages, and come from wide variety of cultures and religious groups.
Because of this, our pupils develop a strong appreciation of the value of diversity, and the importance of tolerance and mutual respect. We find this leads to a greater sense of personal responsibility, which we encourage further through roles such as prefects, and head boys and girls.
We believe this prepares children well for living in modern Britain’s multi-cultural society. It also means we have a huge number of religious festivals to enjoy celebrating, and a superb variety of food at school events.
An individual education
The variety of our intake means one size cannot fit all. The size of the school means we are able to deal with this by delivering a highly personalised education for each pupil.
From helping someone speak English for the first time, to meeting the needs of those who require extra educational support, or engaging the brightest children with extra challenges, Ashburnham rises to the challenge.
Best of all is seeing how the children support each other in achieving the educational goals set for them. A whole class applauding one of their friends who finally achieves a target they’ve been struggling with, is a heart-warming sight.
