Supporting Your Child’s learning

What children do at school is only one part of their learning. Parents and carers play a vital role in their children’s education at home. Supporting school learning by hearing your child read their school reading book at least three times each week, completing and returning homework and practicing spellings will all make a big difference over seven years at primary school.

Homework at primary school

Homework reinforces what your child is learning in school. It also gives you a chance to become involved in the learning process.

In Key Stage 1 (Reception to Year 2) reading is the most important homework. Your child may always have a book from the classroom library in his or her bag – try to read the book together every night. You should always fill in the ‘reading record’ about your child’s progress with reading.

Talking to your children about what they learned in school on a particular day can be the most valuable homework of all, especially if you show interest and play an active role by asking your child questions.

Equally important to homework are other things you can do with your child like:

• Reading or sharing a book with your child at bedtime each night
• Baking cakes
• Painting and drawing pictures
• Asking them to help with shopping – writing lists and counting money
• Playing outside
• Visiting local museums such as the Science, Natural History or V&A museums, all of which are free entry
• Going to a library
• Going swimming
