Assessment Arrangements

Assessment arrangements for foundation subjects:

At Ashburnham Community School, we use a range of formative and summative assessments to assess achievement and attainment in all foundation subjects.  All units of work begin with a ‘prior learning’ or ‘show what you know’ session which includes a mind map, a scaling question and an opportunity to ask 3 questions about the upcoming unit. This is an opportunity for teachers to see the starting points of individual children and groups of learners and to find out what the children would like to know by the end of the unit.

At the end of a unit, teachers assess the children using an end of unit assessment and an end of unit evaluation. The assessment links to the skills and knowledge that has been taught throughout the unit and the evaluation allows children to reflect back on their initial prior learning and see how much they have learnt and whether they can now answer their own questions.

In some subjects we use published schemes of assessments and in other subjects we devise assessments around the curriculum. We also use speaking and listening assessments for subjects where appropriate, for example in French.

The half termly or termly data analysis helps teachers and other adults to identify achievement and attainment by particular groups of learners and to identify the most able children and where some children may need extra additional support or intervention.  Foundation subject leaders report data to Governors three times a year.
